Trade unionists turned out in large numbers last night (Tuesday) for a public meeting in the Concord at Dumbarton.

UNITE convener Margaret Wood, pictured right with Unison’s Valerie Jennings,  thanked everyone who went along, especially the road, repairs and home care workers from West Dunbartonshire Council, who were well represented.

She thanked also the union officials from Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde and Renfrew, “who gave fantastic contributions”.

And Councillors Colin Jackson from Inverclyde and Jim Bollan whose contributions were “inspirational”.

Labour leader David McBride was also present and promised support.

Margaret said: “The unions will get together to move us forward and with the communities support we will get a budget that fits our needs.”

Sean Davenport added: “Another very positive meeting with plenty to take from it and work on going forward.

“However, I was extremely disappointed once again, but not surprised, at the lack of local politicians in attendance.”

Margaret McVey said: “Hope the people of Dumbarton remember all these cuts next election day.  We should vote these a***holes out.  I know who I will be voting for [next time].

“The Community Party’s Jim Bollan seems to be the only councillor who cares about the people of Dumbarton.”

Margaret Wood endorsed these remarks – “Community Party for me also.”

Cllr Bollan himself said this was an excellent meeting hosted by WDC unions with great contributions from our sister Unions in Glasgow, Renfrew, Inverclyde, East Dunbartonshire and Argyll & Bute.

“Unity is strength. Let us build solidarity with all the communities in these areas and build a joint mass campaign of opposition to the cuts in Public Services and jobs.”
