SAGAS AND STROLLS SUNDAYS – 2 AUCHENTORLIE TERRACE, BOWLING
Henry Burrell was born at 2 Auchentorlie Terrace in 1866. Who was he? You might have heard of the Burrell Collection? Henry was the brother of William Burrell, whose collection was donated to Glasgow Museums.
Henry’s father William Burrell and Isabella Guthrie married in 1856 and had nine children, one of whom was to become Sir William Burrell, ship owner and art collector. There were three other sons and five daughters.
Henry never married so for most of his life he stayed with his parents, firstly at Auchentorlie Terrace until c.1874, Clydebank House, Yoker until 1879 , Elmbank, Bowling until 1891 and 4 Devonshire Gardens with his mother and various siblings until 1913.
Between 1900 and 1907 Henry successfully submitted seven patents, all of which dealt with aspects of ship building
Henry lived at 4 Devonshire Gardens until the death of his mother. Upon her death the trustees of his mothers estate took Henry to court to removed him from the house presumably to sell the property.
Henry lived at 73 Robertson Street in Glasgow for the rest of his life. He died at a tuberculosis sanatorium in Banchory on the 15th July 1924.
We found the Burrell family living at 2 Auchentorlie Terrace in 1871 in this Census record. The writing is a bit faint in the Census but the other occupations of some of their neighbours in the terrace include a steamboat master, retired farmer, paper maker and elementary teacher – quite a mix!
