POPPY SCOTLAND APPEAL LAUNCHED AT HM NAVAL BASE CLYDE

Events began and Hermitage Primary School, led by the Royal Navy guard and HMS Neptune Volunteer Band. The participants marched to the park’s Garden of Remembrance. Taking the salute outside Victoria Halls was Naval Base Commander Clyde, Commodore Donald Doull, who also laid a wreath outside the town’s cenotaph. MEMBERS of the Royal Navy attended Remembrance Services around Scotland today to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of their country.

New ways to donate to the Poppy Scotland Appeal by mobile phone.

SERVICE personnel at HM Naval Base Clyde joined together to launch the 2020 Poppy Scotland Appeal.

The first poppies went on sale in the Naval Base today (Monday, October 26), in HMS Neptune’s Supermess at 10.30am, with Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines going along to make their donations to this year’s appeal.

Normally, four million poppies are distributed across Scotland by 10,000 volunteers who carry out collections in various venues all around the country.

This year, many of the volunteers are having to stay at home because of the Coronavirus pandemic, so Poppy Scotland have had to come up with new ways to support this year’s campaign.

One of the new ways to support is, to donate online, download a printable poppy or one for the kids to colour in and then display in windows at home or at work.

Base staff are encouraged to give generously and wear their poppies with pride. The Scottish Poppy appeal raised over £4 million last year. This enables them to provide tailored support and funding to thousands of ex-Servicemen and women as well as other vital services in advice, employment, mobility, respite, housing and mental health support.

The poppy will celebrate its 100th Birthday in November 2021 and on Monday, November 11, 2020,  a year- long celebration will begin with the launch of the 1921 Poppy Pledge. Individuals and groups are invited to sign up to do their own fund raising with a challenge of raising £1,921 over the course of the year.
