JOURNALISM: A vivid and ultimately heartbreaking portrayal of the life of Lyra McKee

A vivid and ultimately heartbreaking portrayal of the life of Lyra McKee, an inspirational writer and determined journalist from Belfast who received worldwide recognition for her work, including a viral Ted Talk on LGBTQ rights, before she was killed while reporting on violent riots in Derry. Lyra was shot dead aged 29, in 2019, by a member of the New IRA terrorist group.

Drawing on a wealth of footage, director and close friend of Lyra’s Alison Millar pieces together fragments of a remarkable life, examining some of the darkest parts of Northern Ireland’s past and illuminating it with McKee’s own fervent hope for a better future. In this way the film is emblematic of Lyra’s life and poignant proof of her extraordinary legacy.
