A professor and consultant plastic surgeon from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has been recognised by a national charity at an awards ceremony held at Number 10 Downing Street.

Professor Steven Lo was nominated at the Sarcoma UK Charity Awards at the historic Number 10 Downing Street last week, within the Healthcare Professionals Innovation and Excellence category.

Sarcoma UK is a leading charity dedicated to supporting individuals affected by sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that grows in connective tissue like bones, nerves and muscles, and the annual awards look to recognise those who have made significant contributions and advancements in the field.

Steven and colleagues were nominated by the charity for their research on improving function for patients after sarcoma surgery, using muscle and nerve transfers, to allow them to walk better and get back to everyday tasks like shopping.

The nomination highlights Professor Lo’s skills and unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of sarcoma patients.

Consultant Plastic Surgeon Steven Lo said: “I am extremely grateful to Sarcoma UK for the recognition of the work we do in Glasgow.

“However, I would like to thank the Scottish Sarcoma network and our specialist nurses who work together as a team with orthopaedic surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, rehabilitation and other specialists across Scotland in order to get the best outcomes for patients, with what is a very rare and often worrying disease.

“Glasgow is now one of the leading centres in the world for this type of function restoring surgery and I am excited to see what the future brings for sarcoma treatment.”
