EDUCATION: WEST DUNBARTONSHIRE SCHOOLS FAR DOWN NEW LEAGUE TABLE

Search the full 2024 Scottish high school league table – how did your local school fare this year? If you live in West Dunbartonshire and your child is a pupil at one of the local authority schools here then the answer ranges from not very well to abysmal.

Council education chiefs, elected and unelected, almost always assert that league tables are no way to judge how schools are faring. It is no coincidence then that they are usually the ones whose schools are failing to do well in this.

Jordanhill in Glasgow has kept its place at the top for the seventh year running (no surprises there) but how about the rest of the 347 high schools in Scotland? We’ve got the full table for you

Scotland’s best performing secondary schools have been ranked once again by The Times and Sunday Times Scotland High School League Table.

Jordanhill has been named Scotland’s top performing high school for the seventh year running, at least according to the percentage of pupils achieving the ‘gold standard’ of five Highers in the past two years.

The school – the only one in Scotland outwith local authority control included in this survey – saw 89% of pupils achieve this.

East Renfrewshire‘s position as the highest-performing education authority continues, with four schools in the top ten. East Dunbartonshire has three schools in the top ten and six in the top 20.

None of West Dunbartonshire’s secondary schools comes out well in this league table with Our Lady and St Patrick’s in Bellsmyre, Dumbarton, returning the best results but coming only in 180th place.

Dumbarton Academy was 245th and Vale of Leven Academy 280th while the Clydebank schools St Peter the Apostle was 267th and Clydebank High 214th.

If this were the Grand National horse race, which takes place this weekend, then the local schools would be deemed to have fallen at the first fence.

Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh was 118th out of 350 which is the total number included in the table. Argyll and Bute Council has responsibility for their education.

Politicians maintain that by publishing this league table newspapers will discourage pupils, but the truth of the matter is that they fear parents won’t vote for them, especially if they are the government or council administration. which has been responsible for imposing swingeing budget cuts in education services.

In both cases, Holyrood and West Dunbartonshire, the SNP was in power when this table was compiled.

Parents and guardians cannot let themselves off the hook for “bad results” however since it is their responsibility to ensure that their children attend school, and too many of them have been neglecting their duty in that regard in recent times, especially during and post the Covic pandemic. Truancy rates are soaring.

Teachers have had a tough time bringing order to classrooms and there have been too many “whiteboard jungle” instances of teachers being assaulted by their pupils. One teacher was badly bitten by a pupil. See picture right.

Morale is said to be at rock bottom in many schools amongst both staff and pupils.

Bearsden Academy, in East Dunbartonshire, retained its position in second place with 81% of pupils hitting the standard. Mearns Castle High School in East Renfrewshire, moved into third place with an increase from 73 to 80% in the number of pupils achieving five Highers.

Boclair Academy, also in East Dunbartonshire, is the highest new entry in the top ten, rising ten places to sixth. Linlithgow Academy, in West Lothian, has reclaimed a place in the top ten for the first time since 2016, with 70% of pupils scoring five Highers.

It is plain for all to see that the best results come from pupils whose homes are in middle class areas with high employment where people are well educated and comfortably off.

Areas of deprivation such as West Dunbartonshire just don’t feature well despite the fact that WDC recently rebutted a report in The Democrat that stated there was concern here about the number of pupils leaving secondary school whose reading and writing was extremely poor.

And that some children were barely numerate enough to pass the test for a job as a check out assistant in a supermarket.

Meanwhile, Boroughmuir High was the top performing school in Edinburgh and the only one from the capital in the top ten. Around one in four pupils in the city go to private schools which are not part of this list. Cults Academy, in Aberdeen, fell out of the top ten this year, dropping ten places to 16th.

Jenny Gilruth, the SNP’s education secretary, disclosed that she had recently visited Jordanhill. “I think it is an interesting model. I think there is more we can learn from Jordanhill that we are perhaps not learning,” she told the Sunday Times in March.

Among the most improved schools was Lochgilphead High, in Argyll, with 36% at gold standard, up 16 percentage points since 2022 and the best result since 2016 (44%). Woodmill School, in Fife, one of the biggest schools in Scotland with more than 1,400 pupils, also hit 50% gold standard pupils for the first time.
