Anas Sarwar’s Chief of Staff Kate Watson was appointed as General Secretary of the Scottish Labour Party.

“Kate brings a wealth of experience with the party over many years and she is perfectly suited to lead our fantastic staff team at this crucial time.
“The General Election result showed that Scottish Labour can deliver change for Scotland and I’d like to again place on record my thanks and gratitude to John-Paul McHugh for the work he carried out as General Secretary to deliver that.
“Now we have gotten rid of one failing government, our focus is on the 2026 Scottish Parliament election. Kate’s appointment demonstrates that we are getting election ready.
“The importance of this election cannot be overstated – both for our party and our country. After almost two decades of SNP Government, every institution and public service in Scotland is weaker than when they took office.
“With almost 1 in 6 Scots stuck on an NHS waiting list, Scotland’s education system tumbling down the international league tables and our economy stagnating, it’s clear we need a new direction.
“Scottish Labour stands ready to deliver that new direction that the people of Scotland are crying out for.”
Kate Watson said: “It is fantastic to take on this new role at such a pivotal time for our party and our country.
“I am excited to continue working to build on the strong legacy left behind by John Paul McHugh and take our party into the 2026 election.
“Scotland needs a change in direction and I know Scottish Labour can deliver it.”
- Kate Watson first worked for the Labour Party as an organiser in 2008. She went on to work for Douglas Alexander first in Westminster, and latterly in his consultancy company. Kate also worked closely with Alistair Darling and served as the Director of Operations at Better Together during the 2014 referendum. She has served as Anas Sarwar’s Chief of Staff since 2021.
