Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie has backed a fundraising appeal that encourages Scots giving up treats for Lent to donate to peace-building efforts in Colombia.

MSPs from all of Scotland’s parties put politics aside to give their backing to the WEE BOX appeal 2025 in the run up to Easter.

Ms Baillie, who is Scottish Labour’s Deputy Leader, joined First Minister John Swinney, Patrick Harvie of the Green Party, Alba’s Ash Regan, Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Alex Cole-Hamilton and Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay as they joined forces to support the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund’s annual appeal, which raises vital funds for its life-changing work in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Lent is 40 days of reflection, fasting, and prayer leading up to Easter. Each year generous Scots up and down the country give up a favourite treat such as coffee, chocolate, wine or crisps during Lent and put the money they save into a SCIAF WEE BOX.

Supporters also hold fundraising events in their schools and parishes and take on personal challenges to raise money. They then donate whatever they raise at Easter to provide a hand-up to vulnerable communities worldwide, struggling to survive due to hunger, poverty, conflict and the climate emergency.

This year, SCIAF’s appeal focusses on emergency relief and peace-building projects in Chocó, the poorest – and most violent – part of Colombia.

Jackie Baillie, MSP for Dumbarton, said: “Many of my constituents will be looking forward to Easter but also thinking about those celebrating around the world.

“SCIAF’s vital work means that those giving up treats this Lent know that their sacrifice is bringing real change to those who need it the most.

“I wish SCIAF and those fundraising for it in Dumbarton the best with this year’s important campaign.”

Lorraine Currie, SCIAF’s Chief Executive said: “It’s so nice to see our politicians putting aside their differences to support our work and a better world. At SCIAF, we support people of all faiths and none, and believe that no one should be left behind. And that’s what’s been driving us for the last 60 years.

“I want to thank everyone who helped us be there for our poorest sisters and brothers over the years.

“Please give what you can to the SCIAF appeal this year. Even a small donation makes a huge difference. With your support, a better world is possible.”
