ROYAL NAVY JOIN IN THE FUN AT KINGS CAMP PICTURE SPECIAL

Thursday 17 July 2025

By Paddy O’Brien

THE CHILDREN of Naval Base Clyde workers recently participated in this year’s summer Kings Camp. Kids took part in the event which is sponsored by the Royal Navy Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).

Over 130 children passed through the doors of Lomond School Sports Hall from July 7 through to July 18, all eager to make new friends and partake in activities designed to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

On Tuesday, July 15, the Base Executive Officer, Commander (Cdr) Jon Fletcher MBE took the time to drop in and see just how important this camp was to children of service personnel and local residents. Whilst there, he participated in some of the activities like rock wall climbing and dodgeball. He took time to engage with the children, talking about their experiences and how much fun the camp is for them. One child even asked Jon what he did in the Royal Navy.

After engaging with the young people and the camp’s staff, Jon said “‘It was fantastic to spend some time with the children and coaches at Kings Camp today, even if I didn’t manage to follow all the five Ds of Dodgeball and was hit more than once! It’s clear that all the children are having a wonderful time, enjoying so many different activities and having the chance to interact with other children in a really positive and nurturing environment.”

“My hat goes off to all the coaches making this happen and my sincere thanks to the RNRMC for helping to support Kings Camps across the UK. I think one of the real strengths of Kings Camp is the support and opportunities it gives to all in the community – it is not just for service families.”

The RNRMC provides grants to the camp, which offers a wide range of sports and activities to children aged 5 to 17, across the two weeks. This year’s event hosted a combined total of 136 children over the two weeks.

This year, camps from across the UK are racing their teddy bear mascot, Kingsley. Cdr Fletcher posed for a group photo with the children and Kingsley, wishing him luck for his race back down to Sheffield.

Henry Kelsey, Kings Camp Operations and Partnership Officer, said “Having been on camp as a child myself, becoming a Red Top at Kings Camps has been an amazing experience. Getting to see the incredible impact of our programme on the local community is unbelievably heartwarming and is just one reason I love this job!”

A week at this camp is a fantastic way for children to have some fun. Starting with warm welcomes and leading onto the famous mid-week Wet Wednesday and finishing with the Kings Games – a brilliant way to show parents a glimpse of what has happened throughout the week and possibly leave a Camp Champion.

Kings Camp host summer and school holiday camps at over fifty locations across the UK. The company is a leading provider of holiday sports and activity day camps for children and works closely with Naval Service communities.
