Book Week Scotland is an annual celebration of books and reading with events taking place across Scotland from 17^th to 23^rd of November. West Dunbartonshire Libraries are delighted to be holding three author events which we hope you may be interested in.  All events are FREE but tickets should be booked using the links below. 

Wednesday 19^th November

Trauma Industrial Complex – the commodification of trauma with Darren McGarvey

Clydebank Library 7.00pm 

Exploring trauma, lived experience, and the narratives we tell ourselves about pain, this talk looks at who gains from our stories, and what price we may pay for oversharing. Darren McGarvey, aka LOKI, is a Scottish writer, performer, community activist, and columnist. He has presented eight programmes for BBC Scotland exploring the root causes of social deprivation and anti-social behaviour.

Ian Baillie Memorial Event – Denise Mina: Rizzio and Three Fires

Alexandria Library 7.00pm 

Denise Mina, pictured right, discusses two of her brilliant short novels, Rizzio and Three Fires, exploring historical events that still resonate with our times. Rizzio looks at the murder of David Rizzio, Mary Queen of Scots’ friend and secretary, by her husband Lord Darnley.  While Three Fires focuses on Dominican Friar Girolamo Savonarola, whose sermons culminated in the infamous ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’ in which a wide range of extravagant possessions were burned in public bonfires. Denise is a Scottish writer, known for her crime fiction, graphic novels, and plays. Her work has been recognised with numerous awards, and she has also contributed to television and radio programmes.

Poor Creatures with Mairi Kidd

Dumbarton Library 11.30am 

As the latest big screen adaptation of Frankenstein hits the cinemas and Netflix, Mairi Kidd’s Poor Creatures explores the early years of author Mary Shelley. Inspired by true events, this novel is an immersive reimagining of the young Shelley before she became the author of Frankenstein – a story of girlhood, obsession, and the birth of a literary legend. Mairi Kidd is the Director of the Saltire Society, has been head of Literature, Languages and Publishing at Creative Scotland, and was formerly Managing Director of prize-winning publisher Barrington Stoke.
