Bishop John Keenan, the Bishop of Paisley, has stepped down from his role on medical grounds.
Bishop Keenan is president of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland and one of the eight bishops who have been involved in discussions on the closure of Catholic churches in Scotland.
A statement from the Church said: “Bishop John has been advised to step back temporarily from duties for medical reasons.
“Please keep him in your prayers. We entrust his health to Our Lord and the intercession of Our Blessed Mother, praying for a full and speedy recovery.
“For now, the Vicar General, Monsignor Joe Burke, will look after the day-to-day administration of the diocese.”
