A group of volunteers who help vulnerable children in West Dunbartonshire have been recognised for their service.

Six long-serving members of the Children’s Panel and one member of the Area Support Team (AST), which oversees the work of the Panel locally, were invited to a civic event to celebrate their work.

They included Yvonne Currie from Dumbarton, who has 20 years’ service, and Iain Martin, from Helensburgh, who has served on the panel for 25 years.

Appreciation was also shown for 10 years of service to the Panel by Ethel Bunniss, from Old Kilpatrick, Margaret Ferris, from Dumbarton and Mae Fleming, from Alexandria, and for five years to David Gold, from Glasgow.

A decade of service from AST member Isobel Stuart was also marked.

The event was hosted by Provost William Hendrie and was also attended by Peter Hessett, the Council’s Strategic Lead – Regulatory, and Maureen McGlinchey and Barbara Oattes, both members of the AST.

Provost Hendrie also presented certificates to nine new Panel members to recognise their successful completion of pre-service training.

Provost Hendrie, said: “Children’s Panel members, and the AST members who support them, volunteer to improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

“It is great to see people dedicate so much of their time to the welfare of others.  Children in West Dunbartonshire have benefited greatly from their contribution and commitment.”

Peter Hessett added: “Panel and AST members do an amazing job and it is right that their hard work should be recognised by the Council.  They should all be very proud of the work that they do.”

The Children’s Panel is made up of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds who either live or work in the area and make decisions about the welfare of vulnerable children.

Applications for new members are held every year, and will soon open for 2018.

Anyone interested in becoming a Children’s Panel member, or who would like to find out more, should visit or contact Scott Kelly at the Council on 01389 737220.
