UNISON CUTS DEMO

Trade union UNISON are organising a demonstration against public services cuts in Dumbarton on Wednesday.

It will take place outside the Burgh Hall-based council offices in Church Street before West Dunbartonshire Council’s last meeting of the year.

A UNISON spokesperson said: “In light of the recent locally reported budget deficit facing West Dunbartonshire Council for 2019/20,  UNISON West Dunbartonshire Branch are organising a this demonstration to highlight community concern at the proposed cuts to local services.

“The Government tell us austerity is over, yet at a time when demand has never been higher for our public service provision, West Dunbartonshire residents face unprecedented cuts to our much valued, relied upon and locally delivered public services.

“With an estimated £4.3m worth of cuts due to be discussed by Councillors and front line services already stretched to the limit and fast heading for breaking point; UNISON calls on as many people as possible to join the demonstration and to help send a clear message to Councillors that; the community opposes these savage cuts.  Our community needs more, not less by way of public services.”

The SNP-run, Conservative backed Council refused to comment to The Democrat.

The UNISON spokesperson added: “We ask that staff, members of the public and all local residents make themselves available between 5pm and 6.00pm at the front entrance of the Council Offices, 16 Church Street, Dumbarton, G82 1QL.”
