TO BEARD OR NOT TO BEARD?

Santa Claus with or without a beard as women give their verdict.

By Bill Heaney

If you want to know why so many men are growing beards then here’s your answer, according to The Irish Post.

A major new scientific study on the topic has found that men with beards are more attractive to women than those without.

The research, which was published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology, saw 8,520 women asked to rate photographs of men with and without beards for their facial attractiveness.

Each of the men was snapped clean-shaven, five days after shaving, 10 days after shaving and, finally, four weeks after shaving.

The women involved were randomly assigned to treatments wherein they rated faces for either attractiveness in general, attractiveness for a short‐term relationship or attractiveness for a long‐term relationship.

Incredibly, every single woman surveyed as part of the study preferred the pictures of the men where they were sporting facial hair.

Heavy stubble came out on top, receiving the highest rating for general attractiveness.

Men with full beards were the second most popular just ahead of light stubble.

Bearded men were also found to look like better lovers, according to the information gleaned from the research.

The researchers surmised that beards “have a positive association with age and masculine social dominance among women”.

“Beards may be more attractive to women when considering long-term than short-term relationships as they indicate a male’s ability to successfully compete socially with other males for resources,” the research concluded.

The study, titled The masculinity paradox: facial masculinity and beardedness interact to determine women’s ratings of men’s facial attractiveness can be read in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology.

The verdict on my beard, which I have grown to compete with Santa Claus, from my granddaughter, Jane, aged ten, was “it makes you look scruffy, Grampa”.

My wife, Bernie,  doesn’t rate beards at all – although she has said little about the fact that our two sons are suitably hirsute. No doubt theirs are perfect.

Am I bothered? Or am I bearded? That’s my dilemma as we face into 2019.
