|The BBC agreed to fund the licence fees for the over-75s during its last charter funding process. This will cost more than £1 billion by the end of the next decade. The NUJ believes paying this benefit from the licence-fee pot will be catastrophic for our public service broadcaster and the government must pick up the bill. The Welsh-language channel S4C, which loses its government funding and will be dependent on the licence fee settlement from 2023, could also suffer if the BBC’s budget is compromised this way. This is the NUJ’s briefing paper, but you can have your say by taking part in the consultation which closes on Tuesday 12 February.
