Turkey Red Dyeing and Printing Workshop
Free Event at Dumbarton Library on Saturday 2nd March 2019, 10.00-12.00 with Dr Mohammad Shahid, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow (History of Art) at the University of Glasgow
Learn about the history and processes involved in making Turkey red dye, and try the art of dyeing and printing yourself in this hands on workshop.
Textile researcher Dr. Shahid will explore the remarkable journey of Turkey red dye and how madder root extract was used to achieve such beautiful rich red colours on cotton. You will then have the opportunity to use the block printing process to create patterns on dyed Turkey red fabric. At the end of workshop, you will also get a chance to see examples of historic Turkey red textiles from West Dunbartonshire Council collections and the University of Glasgow’s Archives.
