It was like an episode from Sunday night police thriller Line of Duty which had just finished on television when three men burst into an Old Kilpatrick public house minutes after the programme ended.
Detectives are now appealing for information after a firearm was discharged during an attempted robbery at The Twisted Thistle in Dumbarton Road.
No-one was injured and nothing was stolen during the incident, which happened around 10.15 pm., when three men, all described as wearing dark clothing, entered the foyer of the pub.
Two of the men were wearing terrorist-style balaclavas and the other had a scarf covering his face.
The three women members of staff on duty and one male customer drinking in the pub cowered down in fear.
The three men responsible are believed to have made off in a vehicle, for which no description has yet been released, towards Dumbarton.
Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage and carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the quiet village.
Detective Inspector Ogilvie Ross, the officer in charge of the inquiry, is appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
He said: “The Twisted Thistle is a family pub and this is an incredibly rare incident in this area. However, we have increased high-visibility uniform patrols to help re-assure the public.
“I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time the incident occurred or anyone who has information about the identity of those involved to get in touch with me as a matter of urgency.”
Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident 4760 of 31 March 2019. Information can also be given anonymously to Crime-stoppers on 0800 555 111.
