“Why do you spend money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which doth not satisfy you? Hearken diligently to me, and eat that which is good, and your soul shall be delighted in fatness.” At virtual Mass on Sunday with Fr Alban McCoy OFM celebrating at St Edmund’s, Cambridge, my ears and conscience both prickled at Isaiah’s apparent advocacy of spiritual hedonism. I paid particular attention to Alban’s homily after that. So it was both delightful and salutary to receive this morning’s latest offering from our medieval chronicler, Michael Carter. St Benedict was among many who warned against the consequences of over-indulgence. It’s good to be back at work, and liberated from the temptations of the newly-reopened coffee and cake shops.
