“With Scotland now deep into recession, we simply cannot afford to waste time,”  Jackie Baillie MSP for Dumbarton, Vale of Leven, Helensburgh and Lomond, pictured left,  said at the weekend.

She was commenting on the Scottish Government GDP statistics for the second quarter of 2020.

Ms Baillie added: ““The colossal drop in Scotland’s GDP between April and June makes clear what we already knew: Scotland has one of the worst performing economies in Europe.

“The Scottish and UK Governments must step up to the plate and produce a plan to kick start Scotland’s economy in the forthcoming programme for government.

“We cannot cut our way out of this recession [with yet another austerity programme], nor can we allow thousands of jobs to go to the wall.

“We need investment in local businesses here and across Scotland to kick start the recovery and we need a proper jobs guarantee scheme to protect the livelihoods of West Dunbartonshire and Argyll and Bute’s workforce.

“We are in the midst of an economic crisis the likes of which we have not seen for decades. We must be bold and meet this challenge head on.”
