PEACE CAMPERS ON SAVE THE WHALES MISSION

UP THE WHALES, DOWN THE NUKES

Cath and Richard Dyer were aware that the huge aggressive NATO naval exercise called Joint Warrior was about to start in Scottish waters, with the Faslane base the centre of operations. On Thursday they heard that a pod of northern bottlenose whales were close to the base in the Gareloch. They felt that the two events were connected, that the arrival of the whales was not accidental and they decided to do what they could to act in solidarity. Yesterday they sailed their yacht, the Tanera Mor, from Inverkip to the Gare Loch and headed towards the nuclear weapon base, with a large banner attached to the rails, reading UP THE WHALES, DOWN THE NUKES. An MoD launch intercepted them and told them they had entered a restricted area and so had committed an arrestable offence. After checking their names and addresses they sent the couple on their way.
