In memory of my father, Douglas Hay, of West Bridgend, Dumbarton, who was a chief engineer in the Merchant Navy during World War II. Three times, ships he was serving on were torpedoed out from under him, but he swam to safety and returned to his duties as soon as he was fit to do so. He fought for our freedom of speech and freedom of the press amongst all those other things that make us free today. Lest we forget, Dougie’s bravery and sacrifice and all those who served with him from his beloved home town of Dumbarton should never be forgotten. BH
