A new masterplan outlining the key aspirations and priorities for Alexandria over the next 15 years has been created.

The plan will be used to guide and stimulate regeneration in the town, with the needs of the local community at its core.

The masterplan was agreed at a meeting of the Council’s Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development committee following extensive consultation and discussion with stakeholders and the community.

The aim is to return Alexandria Town Centre to the heart of the Vale by boosting enterprise and community activity; creating an attractive and inviting environment; making it safe and easy to move around: providing new homes for people to live in the town centre and celebrating the town’s proud heritage.

According to the Council, the plan provides a clear framework to guide land use and developments over the period, and comprises 12 strategic projects which positively respond to community aspirations.

These include Alexandria Main Street, the Smollett Fountain, Mitchell Way, Alexandria Library, Christie Park and St. Andrews Church, pictured above.

It also focuses on property improvements, new homes and improvements to the cycling and walking network.

Councillor Iain McLaren, pictured left, Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development said: “This masterplan will help us, in partnership with the community and stakeholders, to unlock Alexandria’s potential and maximise opportunities for the town.

“It will require a collaborative approach over a number of years and I am pleased it is now in place to focus our collective minds on what Alexandria needs and help guide the Council and partners as well as attract funding to the area.”

Councillor Diane Docherty, Vice Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “I welcome this masterplan with a clear vision of what we want to see happen in Alexandria over the next 15 years. I am pleased that the priority projects have been shaped by the views of the people of Alexandria through the consultation and that they will continue to have the opportunity to be involved in the master plan and its progress through the Town Centre forum.”

Mitchell Way – the disgrace that is supposed to pass as a shopping centre in Alexandria right now.
