8. Collaborative Leadership

Verene Nicolas

The Collaborative Leadership course was developed by the NUJ to tackle prevalent problems in our industry such as overly-hierarchical structures, bullying cultures, misogyny and poor people management.  Some of these problems are caused by the high stress environments we operate in,often caused by tight deadlines, low staffing levels and a highly competitive market place.  But the way we react to those stressors, both personally and professionally, can mean the difference between a disgruntled and demotivated staff, and a team which works productively and collaboratively  to overcome difficulties.

Module 1 deals with leadership theory, looking in particular at the Michigan Model of leadership and how, as individuals, we match up to that model.  It also looks at understanding conflict through the “iceberg model”, a way of understanding  the needs and motivation both of ourselves and others around us.

Module 2  turns our attention to the inner strength and resources needed to deal constructively with conflict, focusing on key skills such as listening empathically and developing  an awareness of the importance of personal growth and mindfulness. Both modules have their roots in the theory of non-violent communication. Reading resources and an audio relaxation tape are included.
