Leading editors and experts added to Future of News line-upLeading editors and industry experts have joined the line-up for the Society’s Future of News conference in March.

Alison Phillips, Editor of the Daily Mirror, Gabriel Pogrund, Whitehall Editor at The Sunday Times and Maria Breslin, Editor of the Liverpool Echo have been added to the line-up as well as Nic Newman, Senior Research Fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and Professor Charlie Beckett, Founding Director at Polis and Head of the Polis/LSE Journalism and AI research project.

MOJ and open justice

The Ministry of Justice will launch a ‘wide ranging’ call for evidence on open justice, the government has confirmed this week.  Responding to the Justice Committee’s 2022 report into ‘court reporting in the digital age’ the government also rejected a number of the committee’s recommendations for enhancing open justice.

Legislative proposals

Alarming legislative proposals, such as provisions contained within the National Security Bill, are posing a “worrying threat” to press freedom, the Society of Editors President has warned this week. Speaking to the i newspaper, Kamal Ahmed, who trained at the Lennox Herald in Dumbarton, warned that without press freedom, matters of “significant public interest” risked going unreported.

Local news on Radio 4

A new 5-part radio programme looking at local news has started this week on Radio 4. Inside Pages, presented by journalist Ian Wylie, sees him journey to some of the hidden corners of Britain to view small towns through the lens of local reporters. This week’s episode sees Ian visit the weekly newspaper the Goole Times in East Yorkshire.
