Jackie Baillie met up with Loch Lomond Arms Modern Apprentice Conrad Hamilton during Scottish Apprenticeship Week.

The Dumbarton constituency MSP spoke with the hospitality apprentice about his experiences within the industry and the opportunities he has been given through his apprenticeship.

During her visit to the Luss hotel, she also met with Sarah Dalrymple of SDConsultancy Training Provider as well as Brian Kelly, Skills Investment Adviser with Skills Development Scotland.

Jackie Baillie, left, said: “Apprenticeships are a vital way for young people to learn new skills and discover new career paths, and I was delighted to be able to pay a visit to Loch Lomond Arms during Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023.

“The hospitality industry has been through an incredibly tough time due to restrictions which were placed on premises during the pandemic. Businesses in the sector are now facing a cost of living crisis which is not only impacting on their own bills but is potentially restricting the amount of money their customers are spending.

“It was refreshing to hear directly from Conrad about his passion for hospitality and the wealth of experience he has gained through the apprenticeship scheme. I am thankful to the management at the Loch Lomond Arms for providing this opportunity and was pleased to hear the business is performing well, despite difficult trading conditions.

“Unfortunately, there are two few spaces available on such programmes which could transform the futures for our young people.

“This year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week must see the Scottish Government focus on improving the chances for our young people and delivering more apprenticeships in Scotland.

“There is clearly a need for additional investment by the SNP government to make these opportunities available.”
