Dublin Fire Brigade attacked in riots

Dublin Fire Brigade divisional organiser Geoff McEvoy has said last night’s events included an attack on a Dublin Fire Brigade truck.

“That truck was actually among the Dublin Fire Brigade trucks and ambulances that were first on the scene giving paramedic assistance to the victims of that stabbing that afternoon,” Mr McEvoy said.

“Then at about 6 o’clock, the shift changed and the night shift came on. And one of the first calls of that truck responded to was a petrol bombing of a refugee centre in Sherrard Street, or at least a premises that was understood locally to be utilised as a refugee centre.

“Fortunately, it was empty at the time the security guard had got out, but even then there was a mob at that site that were heckling the crews and I understand throwing things at the crews as they were trying to put out the fire at that premises.”

He said that what happened last night was unprecedented in that fire fighters were “actually being impeded” by elements within those mobs in doing their duty and then after the petrol bomb incident, that same truck then responded to a call that there was a garda vehicle on fire in the city centre.

“And it was at that point that they actually couldn’t get to that incident because they themselves came under attack,” Mr McEvoy said.

“The truck was pelted with projectiles. It was beaten with iron implements and equipment was taken off the truck and ultimately, they had to go back to their station.”
