Roo’s Kitchen: Dumbarton restaurant owner tells it as it is

Dear readers,

What follows is real and comes straight from how I am feeling.  Some days are harder than others. The last 4 years of my life have been some of the hardest times I have ever gone through.
Being self employed is one of the toughest things ever. We have had so many sleepless nights worrying about if we could ever pay the bills we had coming out, wondering when our next income was coming in, debating whether we were going to be able to carry on or not.
It’s almost been a year now since we opened the shop and only a couple of weeks ago we opened our second shop. We now have 15 employees including ourselves. 15 people we need to make sure are happy at work, 15 people to make sure we are making enough money to pay their wages each week so they can heat their homes and feed their families, this is a pressure like no other.
To make sure we can pay all our overheads so we can keep the shops going, we don’t have any second jobs, we don’t do anything on the side. The shops are our lives and we put everything we have into them
Lately we have been receiving so much backlash about so many things.
We have worked damn hard to get where we are. It’s been 18+ hours a day, every day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The longest holiday we had was from Thursday-Monday but still being at the end of a phone in case of any problems or emergencies.
It’s been all sorts of comments lately, every single one I see. Comments regarding the corkage, about why we don’t employ more men, comments about prices, about menus, why we don’t support more than 2 charities per month, honesty the list is endless.
If you don’t want to pay the corkage fee then don’t bring alcohol. We have plenty of other drinks you can purchase throughout your evening and we get praised on our service and food so you can still enjoy your evening.
Not happy about our prices?  There are lots of other small local businesses you can support in these trying times. We give gift vouchers to 2 charities per month. Anymore than that and we may as well start giving everything away for free.
We are a diverse group of people that works within Roo’s. Yes there may only be 2 guys that work in our wee team however that ain’t through our own choice. No guys ever apply for the jobs and if they do they end up not bothering turning up for the job.
We are a small business, we shouldn’t have to justify everything. All our policies are in place for a reason
We try our damn hardest to ensure we make everyone happy, at the end of the day all we are providing is your breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s nothing more and nothing less
People will always have opinions, me more than most. It doesn’t mean you always have to say everything you feel.
Social media is a horrible place, anyone who does this for a living, hats of to you all.
We are just trying to run a couple of small shops, to provide something different to the local area, make a way for ourselves. So that when we have a family we can provide a great life for them.
We both have lots of experience in hospitality as well as all of our staff. We all know what we are doing but always learn new things everyday. It’s a part of life.
Maybe this post is too raw, maybe it will just get more hate, who knows. I felt like it needed to be said. I feel like I needed to say it. I probably could have written more but I wouldn’t want to bore you.
If you did take the time to read to the end, I thank you. Your support means the world and we will continue to do what we do ❤️

All my love,

Roo ❤️
