Police investigating hate crime reports after Rangers v Celtic match

Police said they were also ‘aware’ of a man being struck by an object at the game

A number of alleged hate-related crimes during the Rangers v Celtic match in Glasgow are being investigated, Police Scotland said.

The Old Firm game on Sunday afternoon resulted in a 3-3 draw.

Police said no arrests were made at Ibrox Stadium, but a small number of reports relating to hate crimes are being assessed.

They were also informed of an object being thrown, striking a man, but he did not require medical attention.

“One man was struck but did not require treatment and inquiries are ongoing.”

Celtic are to speak to Police Scotland after missiles appeared to be thrown at staff during Sunday’s game against Rangers.

TV pictures showed assistant manager John Kennedy reacting after coins and other objects landed in the dugout area.

Celtic said it was “totally unacceptable that our staff have once again been targeted in this way”.

A club spokesperson added: “We will be raising our serious concerns with Rangers and we understand that the matter is currently being investigated by Police Scotland.”

Police officers spoke to Celtic staff after coins looked to be thrown from a section of the Ibrox crowd behind the technical area.

There has been a series of incidents of missile-throwing during recent clashes between the Glasgow sides.

In April 2022, a Celtic physiotherapist was hit on the head by a glass bottle and glass was removed from the Celtic penalty area during a match at Rangers’ home ground.

The following month, Rangers said its supporters had been left “unprotected” and that elderly and disabled fans had been injured by bottles and other missiles thrown at Celtic Park.

At the time, Celtic said its supporters and stewards were also hit by debris, including seats ripped from the stands.

A Rangers spokesperson confirmed the club were assisting Police Scotland with their inquiries into the latest incident.

Police Scotland said: “We are aware of an object being thrown at Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow, during the Rangers v Celtic match on Sunday.

“One man was struck but did not require treatment and inquiries are ongoing.”

Meanwhile,  a number of people have been reported over disorder offences in Glasgow after a large-scale police response to an incident near the city centre.

Police Scotland said crowds were dispersed in the Gallowgate area, close to Glasgow Green, after reports of a “disturbance”.

Dozens of officers were witnessed running along Bell Street at about 20:40.

Footage shared on social media showed about 15 police vehicles arrive in an emergency response with sirens and blue lights flashing.

Police said nobody was injured in the incident.

A force spokesperson said: “Emergency services attended and engaged with those gathered.

“There were no reported injuries and the crowds dispersed from the area.

“A number of people have been reported in connection with disorder offences.”

Police Scotland has not confirmed if the disorder was football-related and said inquiries were ongoing.

The force said officers would remain in the area and additional patrols would be carried out.
