A strict rule of the National Union of Journalists of which I am a Life Member states that scribblers like me should not intrude into private grief.
It is for that reason that The Dumbarton Democrat will not be carrying a report of the Germany v Scotland match in Munich tonight.
Instead I have handed over that task to my old school friend Stewart Sweeney, who has submitted the following from his place of exile in Australia:
With a wee bit of help from the McAlgorithm of MacChatGPT my draft poem in the style of Burns in the wake of a predictable 5-1 defeat by Germany in the EURO. Stewart Sweeney
ONWARDS
When Scotland’s lads gae tae the field,
In EURO’s clash sae braw,
They faced the Germans, might revealed,
An’ lost 5-1, for aw that.
Wi’ hearts sae brave, they played the game,
Wi’ honor, pride, an’ a’,
Though Germans scored, they felt nae shame,
For spirit’s worth, for aw that.
The goals cam’ fast, the crowd did cheer,
The Scots stood firm and a’,
Wi’ every strike, they showed nae fear,
Though down they were, for aw that.
A 5-1 loss, a bitter day,
Yet courage ne’er did fa’,
For in their hearts, they ken the way,
It’s fight they love, for aw that.
So let the world still hear the sound,
Of pipes and drums, sae braw,
For Scotland’s pride, on EURO’s ground,
Is undeterred, for aw that.
