By Lucy Ashton
Remarkable search dog Barra spent 11 years in a crucial role helping to find bodies in the River Clyde. The Springer Spaniel was the first and only Scotland’s underwater qualified sniffer dog.
Owner and master Iain Marshall from Luss, a Helensburgh Coastguard volunteer, provided the specialised training for Barra, leading to the creation of K9 Search & Recovery.
Barra retired from duty in 2022, after a short illness sadly the extraordinary canine passed away in May. Iain said “Barra devoted his entire life to helping others right up to the age of 13 years which is remarkable in itself. Barra and I had such a special bond together. Rest easy till we meet again and thank you for your service and being the best friend I ever had”
Barra will be honoured with a rare animal OBE for outstanding acts of bravery and dedication.
And so well deserved Barra and Iain.
