He polled 19,312 votes to take the newly extended Westminster seat from Martin Docherty Hughes, of the Scottish National Party (SNP) who received 13,302 votes and was 6,000 votes adrift of the winning total.
Details of the election of member to serve in the parliament for the West Dunbartonshire County constituency were announced by Returning Officer Peter Hessett, the Council’s chief executive.
The total number of ballot papers counted in the election was 39,707 and the turnout was 57.5%.
The total number of votes cast for each candidate the constituency, which now includes Scotstoun and Garscadden, was as follows:
| Outcome | No of votes |

Mr Hessett said: “I declare that the candidate elected to serve as the Member of Parliament for the West Dunbartonshire County Constituency is Douglas McAllister.”
Unfortunately, the Council’s own website got it wrong when it came to posting the result which it said was for 2019 and not 2024.
