A new safety limit on a pesticide that kills marine wildlife has been delayed by four years following pressure from the salmon farming industry. |
The Scottish Government has said it will not introduce restrictions on the toxic chemical, emamectin, until 2028 because of opposition from fish farming companies. |
Environmental groups condemned the delay as “completely unacceptable”, saying ministers should be “ashamed of themselves”. The use of emamectin had to be “drastically reduced” now to protect wildlife and the shell-fishing industry, they claimed.THE FULL EXCLUSIVE STORY IS ON THE FERRET WEBSITE |
Used to mass medicate in Salmon pens the fall out from its application kills marine life for miles around.
Scottish salmon truly deserves the title of the chlorinated chicken of the seas. But its all about profit and just about all of the salmon fish farms in Scotland are owned by Norwegian and Icelandic companies.
And if you speak out or campaign against the atrocious level of fish deaths which can be as high as 75% or campaign about the effects of pesticides on the environment these big fish farm companies can and have taken SLAPP legal procedures where campaigners are interdicted into silence and or are interdicted in being able to access the seas anywhere near fish farms or even fly drones else the risk of immediate jailing. ( SLAPP equals Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation )
So lets put that into perspective. A local Dumbarton resident is concerned about toxic chemicals being used in a Clyde fish farm which is poisoning and wiping out all the marine life. Moreover the Dumbarton resident is concerned about huge numbers of fish deaths and fish escapes.
Campaigning about his concerns the multi national fish business employs expensive solicitors who apply for an interdict to silence the Dumbarton resident and restricting him to access the Clyde as is his right. Thereafter with Interdict granted Dumbarton resident is in a situation where if he breaks the interdict the sanction is immediate jail for interdict breach.
Nice one do I hear you say. Chilling how big business can silence the little people. Well folks it happened to Don Stanilow a long time campaigner against bad fish farm practice. Frightening you may think – well that’s what it is supposed to be,
( Post script – about twenty five years ago there was a campaigner against the sell off of the dock at Port Glasgow that was understood by many to be the property of the people through royal charter. Campaigner was interdicted not to access the dock. Thereafter with interdict issued he was later arrested for being within 300 metres of dock – and he went to jail. Dock is now owned by large corporate developer. So yes, unless you have big big money you better shut your face – or else. But yes, corporate commercial exploitation is here )
