Celebrations as 25th Scottish Pipe Band Championships take place in Dumbarton

Published 29 July 2024

Thousands of spectators enjoyed the skirl o’ the pipes and other sounds of traditional music at the 25th Scottish Pipe Band Championships on Saturday.

The sun was shining as 120 pipe bands from around the world descended on Levengrove Park, Dumbarton, for the event.

And after a day of intense competition, which saw Scottish and UK bands going up against bands from further afield including Australia and Oman, Inveraray and District were crowned Grade 1 Champions.

The band was presented with their award before they led the rest of the bands in parade to round off the day.

Chieftain of the event, West Dunbartonshire’s Provost Douglas McAllister MP, said: “What a fantastic day we’ve had marking 25 years of this event. I am delighted that this event, hosted in partnership with the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, has been another outstanding success.

“The day was full of tradition, excitement, fun and of course intense competition for the participants – and with the addition of a bit of sunshine, I know all who attended thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Over the past 25 years, the Scottish Pipe Band Championships has become one of the highlights of our events calendar and a wonderful family day out – this year has been no different. Levengrove Park is the perfect stage to host this event and to showcase what West Dunbartonshire has to offer, not only during the championships but all year round.

“I’d like to thank all of the bands who performed for putting on such a spectacular show.”

Colin Mulhern, Chief Executive of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, said: “What a great year this has been at the Scottish Championships where, as always, the standards were extremely high.

“Bands come here from all over the world and no wonder – what better way to test themselves than against the best Scotland has to offer.

“Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who took part to make this such a special 25th year of the Scottish Championships.”
