| NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is encouraging staff to swap four wheels for two in its ongoing drive to promote sustainability and lower emissions.
It’s got a huge job on its hands though since the car parks at the Gartnavel Campus where the board headquarters are situated are so packed with cars that they look like Silverstone on a Formula 1 Sunday.
Undaunted however they have half a dozen or so bikes on display for short term hire near the campus gate off Great Western Road near Anniesland.
As well as its ongoing drive towards net zero, NHSGGC is committed to promoting active and sustainable travel among its staff, and it has put in place a number of initiatives to support that.
Events such as Dr Bike take place regularly across our main hospital sites, providing staff with access to a bike expert where they can get repairs done and learn more about bike maintenance.
Through Cyclescheme, staff have the opportunity to buy bikes and cycling equipment through their salary. By doing this, savings of between 25% and 39% can be made, and the cost can be spread over 6, 12, 18 or 24 months.
The health board is also committed to installing secure bike storage across all of its main hospital sites for staff, patients and visitors to use, which cuts down on the use of cars, for those who are able to use pedal power. |
