The bad news is that Bernie is still in hospital. The good news is that she is showing, after three long months, the first signs of making a recovery, not immediately but eventually. Yesterday was her birthday and she has asked me to thank you all for the good wishes, the cards and flowers and presents. The nurses and doctors even came up with a card and a birthday cake to celebrate and the other patients gathered round and sang Happy Birthday. Thank you from me too for your support during what has been a difficult time for me and the boys, Damian and Bryan, who with Helen and Clare have been brilliant. Thanks a million.

You never know when a loved one needs medical treatment.
Thank goodness that the NHS is there, free at the point of use, ready to deliver what is needed, without the fear of not being able to afford treatment.
