Bernadette’s story

Teacher Bernadette works at the same school in Malawi that she attended herself when she was a young girl. But her journey here was not straightforward.

When Bernadette first started school, she suffered from debilitating hunger. It deprived her of energy and reduced her confidence in class. Then, Mary’s Meals arrived at her school.

During the four years she ate our nutritious school meals, Bernadette’s performance soared. Her improved grades earned her a place at secondary school, paving the way for her to become a teacher. Her success was driven by her unwavering determination to rise above poverty and achieve her dreams of teaching the next generation.

She says: “I think that these kids, hopefully they think, ‘one day, I’ll be like her’.”
