Sarah Whitehead elected President of the Society

Sarah Whitehead, Director of Newsgathering and Operations at Sky News has been announced as the new President of the Society of Editors.

Whitehead, who joined Sky in 2011 and has held numerous positions including Head of International News and Head of Home News before being appointed Director of Newsgathering in May 2023, was unanimously elected at the Society’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 4 December and takes over from Kamal Ahmed, Director of Audio at The Telegraph. Joy Yates, Regional Editor at Newsquest Cumbria was elected as Vice-President of the Society.

Fellowship of Society
Donald Martin, the former editor of The Herald and Herald on Sunday in Scotland has been awarded a Fellowship of the Society. Martin, who stepped down as editor-in-chief of Newsquest’s Scottish titles in 2022 to start his own media and management consultancy, was presented with the accolade on Wednesday 4 December following the Society’s Annual General Meeting by chairman Ian MacGregor (pictured).

Public Notice PortalThe public notice portal, an award-winning innovation which displays public notices placed in newspapers in digital form online, is to receive an £800,000 cash injection from Google to fund its expansion. The portal, set up by the News Media Association, will see the funding go towards the development of a fully searchable archive and the creation of consultation functions to help public bodies  engage with public more effectively.

Supporting Disabled Journalists AppealThe Academy for Disabled Journalists has launched a new crowdfunding campaign to help support its work training disabled journalists and ensuring their voices are heard. Over the last 5 years, the organisation has supported over 100 students, in partnership with the NCTJ, to learn journalism skills with students going on to secure roles at the BBC, ITV, and Newsquest as well as many more.

Local Democracy Reporting ServiceThe procurement application window to manage Local Democracy Reporting Service contracts from July 2025 to December 2027 has now opened. Any news organisation wishing to put forward an application as a supplier – to employ Local Democracy Reporters funded by the BBC – have until 14:00hrs on January 16, 2025 to submit an application.
