A season never goes by without a batch of excited teenagers joining Celtic, and, 71 years ago in 1953, it was no different when 18-year-old Hoops-daft youngster, Peter Goldie signed for the club that was in his blood.

And, just a few months ago on June 7, 2024, Peter celebrated his 90th birthday and the club believe the retired St Patrick’s High School teacher be the oldest living Celtic player.

The Dumbarton-born Celt joined the famed Duntocher Hibernian from Vale Emmet in 1952 and less than a year later the defender was at Celtic Park, joining his heroes who would win the Coronation Cup just 10 days after he joined and who also went on to lift the league and Scottish Cup Double in the coming season.

It would take a while for the new Bhoy to make his debut, though, as he suffered a leg-break in the October of his first season, and he took his first-team bow just before Christmas, 1955 in a 5-1 home league win over Partick Thistle.

For much of his time he was understudy to Celtic legend, Sean Fallon, who later became the manager of Dumbarton at Boghead, and that debut was the first of 14 games in the Hoops before leaving to join the army and play for Aldershot in 1958.

His love of Celtic never waned, though, and he was a constant at Celtic games both home and away for decades to come, regularly travelling from his Dumbarton home to watch the Hoops.

A spokesman for the Parkhead club said: “Hail, Hail and a very Happy 90th Birthday to Peter from everyone at Celtic Park.”
