Prime minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has won Canada’s federal election, which was dominated by Donald Trump’s trade war and came in the aftermath of a deadly car-ramming attack in Vancouver.
The Liberals are projected to win more of Parliament’s 343 seats than the Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, though they look set to fall short of an outright majority. In a victory speech in Ottawa, Carney declared that “President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never — that will never, ever happen.”
“We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” he said, referring to the American president’s threats to Canada’s economy and its sovereignty, suggesting it should become the 51st state of the US.
Mr Poilievre, a populist firebrand who campaigned with Trump-like bravado, congratulated Mr Carney, saying the Conservatives will “do our job to hold the government to account”.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has praised Canada as “the closest of allies” following Mark Carney’s election victory.
“With your leadership, and personal ties to the UK, I know the relationship between our two countries will continue to grow,” Sir Keir said in a statement. Carney was governor of the Bank of England between 2013 and 2020.
Sir Keir said the countries would continue to deepen their economic relationship, including at the upcoming G7 meetings being hosted by Canada.
“I welcome your leadership on international issues, and I know we will continue to work closely on defence, security, trade and investment as we look ahead to the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis in June,” he said.
