ARCHBISHOP CALLS FOR RETHINK OF GOVERNMENT IMMIGRATION POLICY

Archdiocese of Glasgow

Archbishop William Nolan, pictured right, visited the ‘Removal Centre’ at Dungavel where over 100 men and women are detained without knowing when they might be released.
Their only crime? Seeking a better life for themselves and their families in this country, Archbishop Nolan told fellow campaigners..
Recalling that yesterday was Father’s Day, the Archbishop reflected on the many fathers held at the unit, separated for their families, and asked for a rethink in UK Government immigration and asylum policy.
Local woman Eileen McBride asked: “On what basis are some immigrants or asylum seekers sent to Dugavel and some to hotels or other accommodation? This is a genuine question. If some are deprived of their liberty while awaiting a decision as to whether they can stay, and some are not, how is the decision arrived at?”
