Officers received a report of fire damage to the statue on Friday morning

Officers confirmed they received a report of “fire damage” to the statue of the late Rangers manager on Edmiston Drive at around 9.15am on Friday.

The former Rangers manager died aged 73 in October 2021, and a statue was erected in 2024.

Walter Smith, left, who also played for Dumbarton and Dundee United,  was one of the most successful managers in the club’s history, having won 21 major trophies and taken the club to the UEFA Cup final in 2008.

Police Scotland said that inquiries remain at an early stage.

A spokesperson said: “Around 9.15am on Friday, October 10, 2025, we received a report of fire damage to a statue in the Edmiston Drive area of Glasgow.

“Inquiries are at an early stage.”

A Rangers spokesperson said: “Rangers FC is aware of an incident at the Walter Smith statue, and strongly condemns this shameful behaviour.

“The matter has been reported to Police Scotland, and work is underway to ensure the site is cleaned and returned to good condition.”
