After an extraordinary 45-year career in the Royal Navy, Chief Petty Officer Dave O’Neill has been formally recognised with the award of the Third Clasp to his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal; a rare and prestigious honour reflecting decades of unwavering dedication.

Currently serving in the Submarine Qualification (SMQ) training environment, where he inspires and mentors the next generation of submariners, CPO O’Neill received the award from a familiar face: Fleet Operational Standards and Training (FOST) Captain Submarines Captain Justin Codd, and a former Commanding Officer. The presentation was not only a moment of formal recognition but also a chance for the two shipmates to reconnect and share stories from their time at sea.

CPO O’Neill began his naval journey in August 1980, entering the Submarine Service after completing trade training at HMS Sultan and HMS Dolphin. His early career saw him serve aboard HMS Valiant, and he later played a pivotal role in the build, trials, and inaugural deterrent patrol of HMS Vanguard, contributing directly to the Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD) programme.

As he approaches retirement next year, CPO O’Neill remains deeply connected to the Submarine Service. With pride, he shared that his daughter, Lieutenant Molly O’Neill, is continuing the family tradition in the Royal Navy. Speaking after the ceremony, he said: “I love the submarine service and would do another 45 years if I could.”

Throughout his career, he served aboard HMS Splendid, Superb, Astute, and Ambush, consistently demonstrating technical excellence, professionalism, and a deep commitment to service. His contributions were formally recognised in 2003 with the Herbert Lott Award for his work aboard HMS Superb, and he also received the Afghanistan Medal for his deployment on Operation TELIC.

In 2021, his enduring dedication was further acknowledged with the Meritorious Service Medal, underscoring his exceptional service record. Beyond his naval duties, CPO O’Neill is a passionate supporter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, reflecting his commitment to serving others both within and outside the Royal Navy.
