Road policing officers spoke with over 300 motorists as part of an operation to keep roads in the Highlands safe

Officers engaged with motorists at key locations to promote road safety and reduce the risk of crashes. This included guiding driving on the left, managing fatigue, and taking care when turning across traffic. These are key factors identified in serious and fatal crashes involving visiting drivers.

Recent activity was carried out at Eilean Donan Castle, Urquhart Castle, and Dunrobin Castle areas, which attract a high volume of visitors during the tourism season. Local community policing officers supported the engagement at Urquhart Castle.

The initiative forms part of ongoing work to address careless and dangerous driving, one of the Fatal 5, through preventative engagement and education.

Sergeant Calum MacAulay, Road Policing Division, said: “Scotland’s road network can be unfamiliar to many visitors, particularly those driving on the left for the first time. By engaging directly with drivers at key locations, we can provide simple, clear advice that helps keep them and others safe.

“This approach is about preventing harm before it occurs, and we’ve had a positive response from those we’ve spoken to.

“We will continue to work with partners over the summer months to support safe travel across the Highlands, ensuring both residents and visitors can enjoy the area safely.”
