If the prelude to this very important football match was Mardi Gras, then the game itself was Ash Wednesday. Morocco scored a shock goal after just 70 seconds, and that was that. The Scots, who hardly got a kick of the ball in the first 45 minutes, did not come into the game until there were only about 20 minutes left. The Scottish goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, had an excellent game and kept the scoreline respectable. Coach Steve Clarke’s decision to be loyal may have cost him the match since he stuck with the players who were in his original squad. Striker Lawrence Shankland, just signed from Hearts to Rangers, was surprisingly left on the bench. Scotland will have to pull out all the stops to get the result they need against Brazil to stay in the tournament. For me, John McGinn and Ben Doak, when he came on late in the game, were Scotland’s best players. Bill Heaney
