MSP BAILLIE PRAISES LOCAL HERO FOR LEVEN LINE COMMUNITY EFFORT

by Bill Heaney

Balloch resident Kevin Osborne had the opportunity to meet the King as part of celebrations to mark the official opening of the Scottish Parliament on Saturday.

The former submariner was the area’s Local Hero and guest of MSP Jackie Baillie at the weekend event.

He joined Jackie to mark the official opening of the seventh session of the Scottish Parliament – which was established in 1999.

Kevin was selected from a shortlist of local heroes, nominated to attend for their efforts in the community.

He established a volunteer group, The Leven Line, which sees him dedicate his spare time to cleaning and renovating the banks of the River Leven.

Kevin – who completed 22 years’ service in the Royal Navy and now works supporting the training and development of submariners –  was nominated for recognition by fellow members of Lomond Parish Church for his contribution to the local environment.

Residents were offered the opportunity to nominate a local hero to join celebrations to mark the official opening of the seventh term – following the Scottish Parliament’s inception in 1999.

King Charles and Queen Camilla attended the ceremonial event – with all 129 MSPs given the chance to take a guest along.

Dumbarton MSP Jackie, who is one of only two MSPs to have served the same constituency since 1999, sought nominations of deserving community champions.

Her pick from the shortlist of a host of worthy nominees was Kevin, who removes litter from the River Leven and works to restore the riverbank.

He carries out enhancements in his own time, using his own tools, to improve the river for the enjoyment of the community.

Jackie said: “I was delighted to welcome Kevin to Holyrood, as recognition of the work he carries out in the community.

“His efforts have helped make the area a better place to live and have contributed to the lives of others.

“There are several dedicated volunteers like Kevin, many of whom are unsung heroes, carrying out all manner of work to enhance the lives of others.

“I would like to extend my thanks to Kevin and to all those who volunteer in our local area, for their commendable efforts.”

An official opening ceremony took place in Holyrood’s Debating Chamber, alongside a celebration of national music and culture.

The event was then followed by a lunch reception hosted by Presiding Officer, Kenneth Gibson.

Delighted Kevin added: “Being invited to the opening of the Scottish Parliament was a huge honour and an experience I will never forget.

“The recognition means a great deal, but what matters most to me and the team is being able to contribute to the community and help make a positive difference along the River Leven.

“The Leven Line has always been about people coming together and caring for our environment.”
