24 Sept, Thu 10am-12noon Defamation and libel
Defamation in Scotland has changed dramatically, as it already has in England. The Defamation & Malicious Publication (Scotland) Act has introduced new defences for journalists, and the English courts have been spelling out how similar defences will be applied there. Carole Cadwalladr won a high-profile libel trial because of these changes. As more people are expressing themselves online via social media and new media outlets, a key aim will be focused on the defamation threats that can occur online.

“First impressions are lasting impressions”, as the saying goes, and that probably applies more now than ever. We seem to be constantly FaceTiming, Zooming, Skyping, or Teaming. But how often do we see on screen a colleague, friend, fellow journalist, and remark how sloppy they or the shot looks? To help with the issues, the NUJ’s Mike Higgins is running a short course – on Zoom, of course – to help you iron out these items and to give you confidence in telling those you are interviewing how to rectify potential issues at their end.
