Marie McNair MSP is at St Margaret of Scotland Hospice in Clydebank

Marie McNair MSP

I had a lovely Sunday attending the official opening and Blessing of the Professor John Welsh Specialist Palliative Care Centre, and Mass celebrated by Archbishop Nolan.
The new Centre honours Professor John Welsh and his remarkable contribution to palliative care across Scotland, and his commitment to St Margaret of Scotland Hospice over the years.
My family and I will be forever grateful to Professor Welsh for the care he gave to our own Mum, and Sister Rita, and all at the hospice will always have a special place in my heart.
I’m on their side, and I will do all I can to make sure they are properly funded for the great work they do.

Marie, thank you for posting this honour to Professor Welsh! During my time as Senior Staff Nurse in St Joseph’s Ward, St Margaret’s Hospice, I had the privilege of working alongside Professor Welsh, an exceptional advocate for all patients within the hospice. He shared his medical knowledge of asbestos, providing insights into the non-pain symptoms of malignant pleural mesothelioma and the associated complex physical, social, physiological, and medical needs.
He also guided me to create awareness among all families affected by asbestos about the appropriate agencies to ensure patients diagnosed with these conditions received the appropriate financial support. My awareness, knowledge, and holistic care were greatly influenced by focusing on and watching the care he bestowed on all his patients. Professor Welsh had an impeccable, professional, caring bedside manner with every patient under his care, listening to all their fears and concerns. I take pride in the knowledge I carried his professionalism with me throughout my career until I retired from the profession.
