Scottish Labour leader Michael Marra told the Labour Women’s Conference today (Saturday) that women’s health is a “top priority” for his party.

He highlighted gynaecological waiting times as a key issue and outlined Scottish Labour’s plans to produce a State of the Nation Report on Women’s Health in Scotland.

Public services and Violence Against Women and Girls were also highlighted as priorities for the party.

He also paid tribute to the late Scottish Labour stalwart Cathie Craigie and her legacy.

Michael Marra said:  “Behind every waiting list statistic are women trying to get on with their lives. We owe those women timely treatment, clear information and the reassurance that their concerns are being taken seriously.

“We know that women in Scotland are not even getting onto gynaecology waiting lists where they could then be stuck for up to three-and-a-half years. The wait in England is an average of 13 weeks.

“The women who share their experiences with us do so in hope that something will improve. I want us to honour that by following through.

“That is why this is a top priority for my leadership and the Scottish Labour team. Our Shadow Health Secretary Jackie Ballie will be continuing her work in holding the Government to account on these failures, and Monica Lennon will lead work across our team on a State of the Nation Report on Women’s Health in Scotland.

“It will bring together evidence and women’s experiences throughout their lives, helping us identify where care needs to improve and what practical action would make a difference.”
