Major bridge works are set to cause disruption on a busy section of Scotland’s busiest motorway over the next two weekends.

The M8 will be closed in both directions in Glasgow between Junction 19 (Anderston) and Junction 24 (Helen Street).

The first closure will run from 18:00 on Saturday until 13:00 on Sunday, affecting the road between Junctions 22 and 24. Diversions will be in place.

The closures are needed to allow the Kirkwood Street and Cornwall Street footbridges, south-west of the city centre, to be lifted back into place after refurbishment work.

Drivers will be diverted off the motorway and routed through Glasgow’s south side using local roads including Paisley Road West, Paisley Road, Helen Street and Dumbreck Road, before re-joining the M8 or M77.

The engineering company Amey, which will be carrying out the work on behalf of Transport Scotland, said road users are “strongly advised to avoid the area” during the closures.
