DOWN MEMORY LANE
My big break: I was considering a career in journalism, but the rector of Vale of Leven Academy said: “Ye cannae dae it. Naebody fae the Vale gets tae work furra newspaper.” But then, my girlfriend reluctantly announced her pregnancy and I was in a funk. I phoned the proprietor of the Helensburgh and Gareloch Times, whose shapeless six-page newspaper sold only on its nostalgic appeal: The headline typefaces were selected to meet the squeeze demanded by loquacity, or running from ten words into a second deck of two words, with one monochrome picture per edition, taken with a prototype Polaroid camera.
The product of these speculative efforts was committed to a backroom Edwardian Centurette cracked flatbed flying press which only a singing drunk called Rab could cause to work.
MISSING MIGRANTS TAKE OFF FROM THEIR DIGS
Garda sources said while it was feared the missing men were effectively attempting to flee to the UK, they were committing no offence by leaving the centre they were taken to. When migrants apply for international protection, or asylum, they are offered accommodation, including meals, in centres around the country or they are housed in emergency accommodation, including B&Bs and hotels. However, people applying for international protection can also stay with family or friends in Ireland. There is no obligation on them to stay in accommodation provided by the State.
INVESTIGATION by BILL HEANEY
Mental health is not a vote catcher. Sufferers are often stigmatized rather than given the assistance they require. Mr Muir said: “Ever since I have been in Dumbarton, it has been alleged that the health board and the council have been corrupt, with officers walking away from the area with large salaries and pensions, whilst covering up mistakes.” He added: “I have found the legal authorities unjust too with it being very rare for a public sector employee to be prosecuted and the police intolerably slow to investigate crimes.”
Like a remarkably high number of people, Andrew considers West Dunbartonshire Council to be a basket case. His views about the Health Board not being fit for purpose appear to have been borne out this week when the Health Secretary, Jeanne Freeman, put that organisation into special measures, which means top officials are being sent in to run it properly. This could happen soon to the Council, which is forever at the centre of controversy, covering up scandals and cutting off communications with journalists anxious to find out what they are up to.
STURGEON AND POPE FRANCIS SING FROM SAME HYMNSHEET ON NUCLEAR WEAPONS
Pope Francis and Nicola Sturgeon found themselves singing from the same hymn sheet on nuclear weapons this Sunday morning. The Pope wants the Faslane-based nuclear submarine fleet scrapped, and the First Minister has told Sky News she is in complete agreement with the Pontiff about ridding Scotland of the Trident nuclear weapon system.
She stated that it is “an absolute red line” for the SNP in any negotiations after the General Election.
The SNP leader confidently laid out her four red line demands to Jeremy Corbyn this morning – insisting he has to give Scotland massive concessions if he wants the keys to No 10.
Ms Sturgeon also listed a second independence referendum, an end to Brexit, and wholesale devolution of powers on drugs, migration and employment.
